Autumn Skincare tips

Do you find that a change in season or temperature has a negative effect on your skin? If so, perhaps you could benefit from a routine shake up as we head into autumn!

To help with the transition from summer to the colder months, we're sharing our top 7 essential tips for your skincare routine, and highlight which products in the Clear Skin Days range can help you help avoid skin sensitivity, dehydration, irritation, and breakouts.

1. hydration

As it gets colder, there is less humidity and central heating can strip our skin of even more moisture. Fluctuations in temperature can play with the skins balance which can lead to our skin misbehaving.

The main risk is dehydrated skin, which can weaken our skin barrier and let through external irritants, such as bacteria, that can lead to breakouts. Also, when skin is dehydrated, it can trick our bodies into over producing oil, which can clog our pores and cause blackheads, whiteheads and blemishes.

So it's important to maintain your skin regime and think about making a couple of changes that provide skin with extra hydration and nourishment. Don't reduce the water intake, you did well in summer, keep this going! Introduce a hydrating sleeping mask into your routine, we know that sleep is one of our skins super powers so a hydration boost here will only be a good thing. Lastly, don't forget hands and lips - use hydrating balms and creams to keep your skin healthy.

2. gentle exfoliation

Exfoliation is important, removing dead, dull skin so we avoid build up in pores that can lead to breakouts. However, because skin can become sensitised to the new colder environment, its best to opt for gentler exfoliants and retinoids that protect our barrier whilst helping to soften and smooth skin.

It's important that you keep up your cleansing game during winter to rid of built-up dirt, impurities and pollutants. Opt for gentle, hydrating cleansers that thoroughly clean the skin, without stripping of natural oils.

Our Clarifying Cleanser is fragrance free and contains oily-skin loving actives like Glycolic Acid and Salicylic Acid to deep cleanse and unblock pores. It also contains Aloe Vera for that always needed soothing hit of hydration. An exfoliating cleanser is a great way to remove rough, dead skin cells during the winter,  but you may want to reduce the frequency or step up the hydration, depending on your skin needs. Try alternating with between our gel cleanser with a creamy cleanser or apply a hydrating serum to damp skin straight after an exfoliating cleanser to relieve any dryness and make skin plumper.

3. retinoids

Retinoids have amazing rejuvenating properties that clear up blemishes & blackheads whilst also improving skin elasticity. But retinoids can also cause skin irritation, which makes them difficult to use for many skin types, let alone in the winter when skin is already dry. Therefore it’s best to use levels that your skin can tolerate, so you don’t risk irritation.

Our Retinol Recovery Serum contains a gentle yet effective level of 5% encapsulated Retinol. This slow-release active ensures no skin irritation and helps skin to regenerate over night to replace our dull surface cells, with new brighter looking skin. It also contains 5% Niacinamide which is a powerful antioxidant that helps to strengthen our skin barrier to better deal with the harsh environment.

If you want to know more about retinol, how it works and the benefits to you skin, take a read of Retinol 101 - this shares everything you need to know and will help you make the best decisions for your skin needs.

4. blemish treatments

As we’ve learned, our skin can be more prone to breakouts during cooler months, so as well as maintaining your skincare regime, having targeted blemish treatments to hand is a great way to get skin back under control, quickly.

Blemish Repair Paste- a non-drying overnight treatment that combines 2% Salicylic Acid and 5% Zinc, 2% Bakuchiol + Kaolin Clay to speed up the recovery process of blemishes, calm aggravated skin and reduce redness.

Blemish Clearing Drops -  contain 1% Zinc + 2% Salicylic Acid + 2% Niacinamide to adapt to your skin needs as it fluctuates throughout changes in weather. It can be used directly on breakouts to target individual blemishes or added into your moisturiser or serum to help control sebum production on those days you feel less dry and more oily.

Hydrocolloid Blemish Clearing Patches  - best used on whiteheads, as they help to absorb all the impurities from the spot overnight and speed up the healing process. The multiple size patches means that you can choose the size of patch that best fits your are of concern!

5. exfoliating acids

Exfoliating acids are another great way of helping to bring back your summer skin glow and help keep skin clear of breakouts, but its key not to overdo it with exfoliation as this could damage our skin barrier. That’s why regular use of gentle acids work wonders on our dry and sensitive skin during cold weather.

Sensitive skin can also suffer from colder weather, leaving skin feeling tight, red, dry, flaky, or inflamed. Therefore its important that your regime combines suitable ingredients and formats to minimise flare-ups, whilst keep skin soft and plump.

Our BHA PHA Pore Refining Solution has combines Gluconolactone (PHA) and Betaine Salicylate (BHA) for effective skin exfoliation for all skin types, including the most sensitive of skin. It includes 4% BHA to remove excess oil, dirt, and sebum from within pores to reduce blackheads and breakouts. It also contains 4% PHA which is skin hydrator that exfoliates the outermost levels of skin to improve overall tone and texture. It also contains Chamomile which is a powerful antioxidant that helps to reduce skin redness that can be brought about by cooler autumn winds.

6. moisturisation

Keeping skin hydrated is key all year round to help minimise breakouts, but even more so in colder, dryer months. Humectants are a great option to help attract water from the air and bind to your skin to keep it moisturised.

Our Mattifying Barrier Moisturiser contains Panthenol (Vitamin B5) which is an anti-inflammatory humectant that helps restore the skins barrier function by activating cells that are important for wound healing.

7. pollution protection

Another important factor to look for in any moisturiser is pollution protection. Pollution is a more prevalent in the colder months, as irritants more likely to penetrate our skin.

Our moisturiser contains an anti-pollution complex to help protect skin and shield it from external aggressors which can cause skin irritation and breakouts.
